Aufgabe
The GMST is the global mean surface temperature. Throughout the world, there are thermometers uniformly spread collecting data every day. The temperatures are taken several times during the day and then, the values are added up and divided by the total number of values. After one year, the mean temperatures of each site will be added up and divided by the number of sites. Temperatures can vary a lot from one year to another. Therefore, in order to get a more significant GMST, temperatures will be collected for several years. With this data you can see if there is a trend towards global warming or not. Unfortunately, before 1961 there is no real GMST due to the lack of correct measurements. Galileo Galilei invented the first thermometer in 1597, but it was not reliable enough. In 1632 a French doctor, Jean Rey, invented the liquid-filled thermometer. The first daily measurements were taken in Britain by Robert Hooke in 1664 but not for long. In 1815 the Radcliff Observatory in Oxford started a continuous record which last to the present day. But for a GMST we need more than just one site. So the first real global measurement has started in 1961. Scientists compare the current temperatures with the past by means of temperature changes. In order to get this information, scientist use a lot of different means, for example, landscape features like U-shaped valleys in Britain which show that there must have been glaciers once.
Fossils of annimals or plants can provide evidence, for example, excavations in the Sahara reveal that there must have been least hostile temperatures in the past. Pollen grains, found in cores of sediments of lakes also reveals what sort of trees have lived there in the past.
But to get the correct picture, scientist need to consider what was the athmospheric composition like in the past and how was the tilt of the earth's rotation axis. There were also changes in the Earth's orbit and in the solar luminosity. All this needs to be considered.

Hey,
I just wrote this one here and I hope that someone could check the grammar and I also hope that someone might come up with a couple of better sentences which fit in the context.
Thanks
mactimo

Hello mactimo!

Some remarks, feel free to adopt or reject my changes.

> The GMST is the global mean surface temperature.

OK, but I'd rather write:

"The acronym GMST stands for Global Mean Surface Temperature.

> Throughout
> the world, there are thermometers uniformly spread

"spread uniformly"

> collecting data every day. The temperatures are taken
> several times during the day and then, the values are added
> up and divided by the total number of values.

Delete the comma. YOu can omit the 2nd occurence of "are". Instead of "The temperatures are" write: "Temperature measurements are".

It is not clear how the mean is computed: by taking the average for each thermometer, or for all thermometers together.

> After one

Are you sure about Jean rey being the first?

> thermometer. The first daily measurements were taken in

"but not for long" means that he stopped after a short time. I think you want to say that "but quickly others followed his example"

> In 1815

Better: "by studying the variations in temperature."

> In order to get this information, scientist use a
> lot of different means,

Start a new sentence here.

> for example, landscape features
> like U-shaped valleys in Britain which show that there must
> have been glaciers once.
>  Fossils of annimals or plants can provide evidence, for

"like" seems to belong to "in the past", better:

"scientist need to consider the athmospheric composition in the past"

> and
> how was the tilt of the earth's rotation axis.

"angle" or "inclination" instead of "tilt"

> There were
> also changes in the Earth's orbit and in the solar
> luminosity. All this needs to be considered.

[ok]

Viele Grüße

Hallo Rainer,
danke für die Antwort. Leider kam sie ein wenig zu spät. In meinem Textbook steht das Jean Rey der erste war der das liquid-filled thermometer erfunden hat. Trotzdem nochmals vielen Dank für deine Mühe.
